Cant wait to read the next volume of Honey Hunt! This series is the most resent shipping war (although we keep it peaceful for the sanity of our home…) between my sister and I.

Fandom: My Breakdown

I love explaining Fandom to people.

The way I see it, at least.

I suppose there is a difference between being a fan, and being in a fandom. A fandom is a way of life (haha) but really it is, and I break Fandom down into the 4 F’s:

  • Fan Fiction
  • Fan Art
  • Fan Vids
  • Fan Forums

If your really a noob and don’t know what any if all of those are, (or don’t know what a noob is) let met break it down in the best (aka: long, drawn out, lengthy, unending) way I can.

First a “noob” is someone who is “new” to something, that easy enough to understand.

Fan Fiction is just as it sounds, fiction written by fans. Okay so most people watch TV, so imagine your watching this weeks new episode of your favorite show. It ends and you wonder to yourself what’s going to happen in the next week’s episode, for most people that is as far as the thoughts go. Other people will spend the next week discussing it with their friends/families/coworkers as they predict the next sequence of events. A fanfiction writer will take those predictions/ideas/hopes and write a story about them, and volia! A fanfiction is created.

Fan Art, again just as it sounds, it is art made by fans for a favorite book/manga/anime/video game/television show/etc.

Fan Vids, sometimes known as AMV’s (animated music videos) are video’s created by fan’s in tribute to their favorite fandom, or ship. (Shipping to be defined and discussed later.)

Fan Forums, a great place for many people of a fandom to come together and discuss and debate. Conversations range from favorite characters, to predictions in plot direction, to individual details within a particular fandom.

Now my favorite part of Fandom, and the reason a lot of people actually get deep into a fandom…. SHIPPING!

Shipping is taken from the word Relationship. Its basically having a preference for particular characters together in a romantic capacity.

With shipping there comes a term “Cannon.” For a couple to be considered cannon, they have to have actually been together as some point in time in the original show/book/movie/manga/anime. Therefore the term “Non-Cannon” would refer to a coupling that is fan created.

The creation of non-cannon couples is what leads to the majority of “Shipping Wars” basically wars (non-violent… mostly) between people who have opposing feelings about who should end up with whom. There have been some great wars fought in the name of non-cannon couples!

Well, there you have it. A somewhat basic overview of Fandom, and things that go along with it! Look out for an upcoming post, where I describe how I first got into fandom, and the major fandom i’m a part of and why.
